Bahrain Championship: Freddy Schott wins first DP World Tour title after thrilling play-off with Patrick Reed and Calum Hill

Freddy Schott won a thrilling Bahrain Championship after coming out on top in a three-way play-off against Patrick Reed and Calum Hill.

Schott, whose victory on Sunday was his first on the DP World Tour, started the day two shots behind leader Hill going into the last round but a rollercoaster final day eventually led to a play-off where Reed and Hill collapsed.

Reed was in the lead himself after a hat-trick of birdies on the back nine but a bogey on the 16th proved costly and he found the bunker off the tee in the first play-off hole.

The American, who announced last week he had left LIV Golf and returned to the PGA Tour, was unable to recover from the error as he bogeyed the hole while his play-off rivals made par.

More drama immediately followed though as Hill's tee shot in the second extra hole veered left and out of bounds. He then found the water while Schott kept his nerve, so Hill conceded the hole - an unusual sight in a play-off - to hand 24-year-old Schott a breakthrough win.

"It's just amazing. I haven't realised anything at all yet. I'm just extremely happy, surprised. I don't know what's happening right now!" said Schott.

"I just stayed in the moment and hit the shots as best as I could. I'm speechless. I could have done it the regular way but doing it this way is even more special."

Former Masters champion Reed came up just short of an extraordinary comeback to win back-to-back titles on the European tour.

Reed was 10 shots off the lead heading into the weekend but the American shot six-under 66 on Saturday and 67 on Sunday to close on 17 under par.

He was tied for the lead in the final round after picking up a shot at the 14th for a third straight birdie, but played the final four holes in one over.

Sergio Garcia was also in contention towards the end after responding from an opening bogey with three birdies in four holes, then made three in a row ahead of the 12th.

However, a double bogey on the par-five 14th scuppered his chances and he finished on 16 under alongside New Zealand's Daniel Hillier in tied fourth.

Meanwhile, Schott (69) bogeyed the 17th and Hill (71), the leader of the second and third rounds, three-putted for bogey at No 18 as they joined Reed in the play-off where Schott, perhaps unexpectedly, came out on top.
